This is stupid. I don't want to do this. I cannot feel at ease with this thing looming over me. I am glad I tried this, but it is not for me. Just go to my LiveJournal, yo. I've had it since 2001 and I have no idea what I was thinking with this. I guess I wanted to be a real "blogger," but all of that just seems so unattainable. I don't want to spend my life here anymore. I want to spend time on my crafts and the relationships and things I enjoy! Not commenting on other blogs so I can get some hits. This blog was never honest enough for me. I will always be here:

enjoy.livejournal.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://tinybadass.blogspot.com/2008/11/it-was-real-it-was-fun-but-it-wasnt.html' title='It was real. Have you experienced or TRIED any of these?

Nintendo DS Homebrew Guide: I love my Nintendo DS, but I'm always a bit overwhelmed when it comes to homebrew applications because I don't have any friends to guide me. James Kochalka is always mentioning his hb applications on his blog. He uses some programs to write music for his band and his son Eli has used DS apps to draw pictures for his own comic blog Monster Attack Adorable. The point is I finally found a good guide with tons of links and reviews! What DS games are you into? My winter wardrobe is so much more dressy than my summer clothes that I feel like a different person. Like a serious identity crisis! But most people dress like slobs, so I feel pretty good about it all. I think my style this fall mostly revolves around tights. I now own 10 pairs and it has taken over my drawers. The unfortunate thing is that 10 is not enough. There are so many patterns and colors that can add so easily to an outfit! I have already posted radical tights, so I'll let you in on what else I'm jonesin' for: long sleeve dresses. I love dresses because it is one whole outfit, but typically dresses that aren't short and/or sleeveless appear matronly. Example:

But with tights and boots we can move on from the Middle Ages and walk briskly through the cold air to the warmth an enclosed space. Don't forget a bracer before you go out though. ;)

If you got somethin' to say, say it to my blog.

Like really. It really gets me pumped because I am having a silly time backstage after my set and I look flyyy. This is the weirdest outfit ever because not one item is thrifted! I always have something vintage on, but apparently not on 10/18/08. Even my shoes weren't.

I love to rap because when I listen to rap it is just doing homework. I think there is a lot of crap on the radio, but there is also a lot of tight songs. Please disregard my brainwashing.

In a previously unforeseen unrelated note, I saw a Christmas tree strapped to a car on Sunday and today I accidently heard a split second of "All I Want for Christmas" by Mariah Carey. Who likes that song? It is so shrill and not a classic at all. Because I have missed making mixes for every holiday that I plan to make one for (ugh, my half-finished Halloween mix was gonna be tight!) over the past 2 years, I need to start on that Christmas mix. They are nice little handmade presents that you can give to anyone. Am I really already discussing this?

Mimmi Pigg; or Soothe the Savage Turd

One quick post before bed.

Mimmi Pigg is Swedish for Minnie Mouse. Adorable! I love the slight change in the first name so that when you say it out loud, you sound retarded.

I have been meditating on all the games I have made up over the years and as I prep for compiling them, I recalled one which, unlike the others, requires crucial supplies, but is in the same vein. One needs a computer and a microphone, which are pretty standard issue these days, but may not be on hand at a park or your grandmother's when you're bored. Record your voice saying a short phrase, such as "I love you" or your full name. Reverse the recording so your voice is speaking backwards. Listen to the backwards voice a few times and memorize how to say the phrase backwards. Channel Thom Yorke on this one. Now, record your voice again saying the phrase backwards. Laugh your ass off as you reverse the recording again. Your voice recording is now speaking forwards, but sounds like you're totes retarded. Do it! I've sat around playing this game for hours, crying, weeping with laughter. Will it ever not be funny?!

Vlogging; or "Is this really happening?"

Vlogs are the raddest shit ever because we get to witness little twerps and total bitches in their purest, most egotistical form. In real life, these people totally piss us off; on the internet, we watch every crummy video of people scratching their ass or soap boxing about some inane topic. The vlog initially fills the same sort of criteria as a blog, but it is so much more. It is a video, not text. I suppose my vanity assuming people want to read this is equal, but call me old fashioned. Well, don't actually because I am totes new fashioned. And I mean I guess I have just undermined my whole argument and don't have much more to say on the topic successfully. I just wanted to post that video, honestly. This boy cracks me up. I want to watch all his videos! So, I guess after all it's a greater meta thing because I hate these videos and love them for the exact same reasons. I have risen from the ashes and am proud to announce my participation in NaBloPoMo, National Blog Posting Month, where in I write a blog post every day during November. This is a rad idea because it is making me write. And because I might win a prize! I think the odds are in my favor because I have not won a random drawing since 6th grade when I won a boombox in the recognition notice drawing. It was so embarassing; I had to walk in front of the WHOLE middle school to accept! GUH! The point is, I have a ton of half written posts I want to get up and share with you. I always have a dozen ideas swirling around in my head so I imagine that this activity will also garner clarity! I just rapped up a ton of shows so I am stoked to have more brain time to devote to my creative whims.

I just bought 5 pairs of 3D glasses, which I fully plan to incorporate into my daily wardrobe. I am gonna mod it up and make some necklaces. If I sold one 3D glasses necklace for $3, I would make almost 100% profit. I mean, that's really all I want to do with my Silky merch, just hand make some crappy kitsch things for my friends. I think I am going to ask min lillebror to do some art for me. Zach draws epic landscapes and then he "destroys" it by covering the scene with a brutal battle. My brother is 9 years younger than me and has always been one of my very best friends.

I have recently found out that a movie is being made of Preacher and The Goon. Seth told me there is going to be a Kick-Ass movie and I mean, I am still not over The Spirit. I know about Y: The Last Man, Black Hole, and We3 and I think there was another beloved tale that is slated to be snatched from my breast. Good God! What's next? Fables? Good-Bye, Chunky Rice? American Elf?!?!? hahaha! So I guess what bothers me is that it seems like all the writers are just leeching off other people's stuff! All the good writers are on television and everybody knows it.

links a-go-go

Today, I found the most fabulous photographs through Betsy through Kathy. The pictures are the oldest known color photographs, as in the year 1872!!! It is so striking to me. It makes the past SO real and understandable. But just now I found this excellent quote from the October 2008 issue of Real Simple. If you're like me and need to pare your closet to make outfitting (or squeezing in new garments) simpler, take an afternoon and ask yourself these questions of each item:

"Do you love it? Is it flattering? Is it you?" If it fail[s] one of these three questions, it [is] a goner.

Those three elements simplify the weeding out process for me ten fold! I hope you can use this tip too!
What are some ways you have trimmed your wardrobe's fat?

Fours

The ineffable Effie of The Snail and the Cyclops fame tagged any everybody to do this mini list. I am also doing the same! Take a minute to comment with your list o' fours or post it to your blog (and also comment that you did so!).

4 things I did today (it's only 10:30 at work, so I'll include yesterday):

Yesterday, I made dinner for my family - a fabulous chicken curry. The recipe said 15 mins, but I am not too comfortable around the kitchen, so it took over an hour. Then my mom and brother were late, so most of the sauce dried out while I was trying to keep it warm. I also used the garlic American cheese I bought at the flea market on a toasted baguette. Yum.

I finally got around to making a Silky Snowflake page on Facebook. I needed to create one so people could have a place to find out about shows instead of just adding me as a friend. So, BECOME A FAN OF SILKY ON FACEBOOK!!

Also last night, I caught a portion of Leonard Nimoy and the Western Wind's The Birthday of the World. Like every American town in mid-September, Our local NPR station aired the recording (though Yom Kippur is on Wednesday?). I am fascinated by Jewish culture and I found the music very beautiful and moving.

It has almost been a month since I placed an order from the weird and cute kawaii store Cutie Stall. I have ordered from them before (Hello Kitty noodle cups!) and it did not take as long, so I sent an email yesterday asking about the shipment. It turns out that because I asked for the "cheapest shipping" it takes about a month to arrive from Japan. $2.75 more and my Japan Birds & Tree Shirt, Korea Spicy Mushroom Noodles, and Nyanko Kitten Notebook (Burger) would have been here in a week! So, word to the wise.

4 things on my to do list (I'm glad it only asks for four):

take bike for tune up (which requires syncing my schedule with my eternally busy friend to pick up my bike and somehow fit it in my tiny car)

sew missing buttons (I've had these dresses I thrifted for months but never worn b/c of crucial button placement)

get shoes fixed (the tip of one high heel came off and I don't have any appropriate glue and the insoles of two thrifted pairs [soft, brown Salvatore Ferragamo pumps and red sling back heels with bows!] are coming loose.)

buy digital camera (i think my barren blog is evidence enough)

4 of my guiltiest pleasures:

My first thought was Pokemon, but I don't feel guilty about it. I love anything with Pokemon (television shows, video games, earrings, plush toys, etc.) and any Pokemon references! I am not well versed in anything past #151, but I love them all.

pop punk

Coca-Cola Classic

eBay (the killer!)

4 random facts about me:

I sometimes worry that people will critique my interests when they find out how rarely I find time for books and music, company for board games, and money for shopping.

I am learning to wear (and love!) gold.

I get stressed about my conflicting desires to wear my favorite t-shirt and beat up Vans vs looking so crisp in bright tights with heels and a new skirt. I love both looks equally, though the latter usually earns more complements! ;)

I love when my cat sleeps on my neck! We are both in cuddle ecstasy!

Style Icon: Parker Posey

I don't know what the first Parker Posey movie I saw was. Perhaps it was subUrbia when I was babysitting or Best in Show at a friend's house. Regardless, I know I immediately fell in love with her. Whether she portrays a rock star's sexy manager in a drama or a neurotic, braces-clad Weimaraner owner in a mockumentary, her unique charisma and mad skillz are off the hook.

Though she truly shines on the screen and stage, when Parker is not acting she still rules. Her classy style is simple but not boring. She rocks the statement piece like no other. Fun tights, accessories, pleats, scarves, bold bags, and even her pup act as the cherry to her look on and off the red carpet. She has such a crisp look, I would love to see inside her closet! Parker isn't a daring style icon, simply a smart, witty actress with a smart, chic style to match.

I was just doing an interview with a girl who's 25, and she says that everyone she knows is a fashion designer. She's like, "Where do you get your clothes?" Why do they ask that? Everyone's asking that. You go to these things and people always want to know what you're wearing, instead of what you're reading, or what you're thinking. —Parker Posey

L.A. doesn't get me... I’m not in a place where I think I should have kids because it’s the thing to do. There’s a part of our society that thinks if you’re a woman and you don’t have children, there’s something wrong with you, that you aren’t complete, and that you are overly ambitious. I’m a mother to a lot of people. I exercise that part of myself. Honestly, I don’t know if it’s in my plan, and I’m approaching 40! I’m really happy to be single and independent and successful. —Parker Posey

Being perfect and looking young and looking beautiful and having wealth - I think people just want that. So they want to see that or dream about it or they want to be movie stars. I want to be a rock star. Really. I'm not ashamed. I want to get on stage and sing. And I can't, but I want to. with Tavi. She is the raddest 7th grader ever. I found her through Tricia on bits and bobbins. I think she has the wildest style. She is a total star. She blogs about her style experiments and her fashion inspirations. Her totally unique style eclipses many seasoned fashioned bloggers. The mad innocence and silliness puts this blog in a wild new category. I love when she nostalgicises to when she was younger and mentions the other kids at her school. Tavi also likes to make pop culture references from the 1990s, which is surprising as she had not developed into a self-aware being until the cusp of the second milennium.
Tavi is one of the fellow "Style Mavens" I follow on my Google Reader page, which I invite you to peep: http://www.google.com/reader/shared/02814428752404135676

The most honest thing I've ever written on this blog

I am having a tough time these days and live for distractions and meaningful interactions. This week is stressful: loss of a loved one, having to perform, and seeing an ex I have yet to get over. Of those three things, none has happened yet, but they will all happen this week and it is harrowing. My chest is tight; I feel as if my heart is swollen with sadness and confusion. My eyes remain puffy. I am swirling in a vortex of half-thoughts, memories, and all the strongest emotions. At any moment I equally desire to get away, seek out a sedative and to meditate out my true feelings and find peace through a clearer understanding, but I---

OMG THEY JUST DELIVERED PIZZA AT WORK! *AFK*

epigraph from Henry Thoreau: A Life of the Mind by Robert D. I felt out of whack. I got a really good rest last night and today I feel energized and ready to tackle all my tasks. So, without further ado, my TILT for today:

rapping: If you've randomly stumbled across my blog, I will inform you that my rap persona is Silky Snowflake and I have so much fun writing songs and performing. I truly do. I get pretty stressed when I have a show coming up, but it is a creative outlet and that is just how I roll. I am a world class procrastinator, so I am always crunched. I bought the flyest threads and accessories yesterday! Leftover 4th of July apparel, giant earrings, and a glasses necklace. Just wait, bra.

the universe: I'm freaked out just writing about it. I'll never get over it. Never. When I look at the sky, I see past the particulate matter and past our local group and past the edges of my imagination into infinity and I am surprised when I come back to my awareness. I fear one day finding myself somewhere else. To be honest, it feels a lot like reading His Dark Materials did.

traveling: I get lightweight bummed when I think about how long it's been since I had a proper trip or vaycay. I went to the beach for a weekend in June and it is too depressing to consider if there has been much else besides overnighters since Disney World last summer. Oh, Disney World... But now I am working towards extended jaunts across the pond and the Mason-Dixon.

random information: a la Wikipedia

It's August already?

In Gala's Carousel post today, she used a link I sent her for Yeondoo Jung's Wonderland collection where he recreated crayon drawings by kindergarteners. Her name was Stacy. She had teeth like the goblins in Harry Potter or maybe Bat Boy. She wore many sassy Tweety Bird shirts, which is not to say that she had an interest in Warner Brothers characters. Instead it was an indicator of the women's plus size selection at the Pelham Wal-Mart. Certainly it has become a uniform. Wal-Mart is slowly amassing an army, obese women from coast to coast outfitted in 4XL Fruit of the Loom t-shirts featuring a pissed off Tinkerbell or teddy bears in backward baseball caps and baggy jeans.

Do the large women identify with these graphics? Why does Wal-Mart want the women to wear this? Why is Tweety so angry? This is a tangent, but please meditate upon these important issues at a later date.

Stacy had a habit of shaking her leg, which is always annoying if sharing a bench or at the movies. I never waited for the bus or visited the theater with Stacy, but these location limitations did not apply to her massive form. Classmates sitting in proximity felt the leg bounce as a mild earthquake, a moderate annoyance. And because the epicenter of this quake was her thigh, the rippling effects upon her body nauseatingly resembled a water bed in outer space. Bless her heart, though, that despite her unfortunate body mass, apparel, and jiggle inclinations she was still SO annoying.

When our teacher posed a question, Stacy would sigh loudly and exasperatedly exclaim, "Who knows?" This comment was not reserved for difficult questions or even for every now and then; Stacy mistakenly assumed the role of class spokeswoman for almost every question asked of us. "What can you guys tell me about blindness as a theme in King Lear?" "Who knows?" "How does a covalent bond work?" "Who knows?" "¿Cómo te llamas?" "¿Quién sabe?" She would often cut me off when I knew the answer. Some teachers would take her word for it and believe none of us had a response! My infuriation climaxed one day when the hypervocalization of Stacy's nonpluss repeatedly halted class discussion so that no progress was made. She was enjoying it, deriving pleasure from that which exasperated me! This was the advanced English 12 course; she was challenging the class's titular superiority with her idiocy. Our particularly feeble English teacher entertained Stacy by engaging her into long tangents wherein she would coax the correct answer out of Stacy. This infuriating loser duet put us so far behind the other classes. My senior year of high school, I studied two works in my literature course: The Cantebury Tales and Macbeth. That's about ten months, y'all.

I needed to take action. Since I knew the teacher was weak, she would acquiesce to my request to silence Stacy's incessant interruptions. I packed my things slowly and I approached Ms. Essman as the last students exited the classroom. Tactfully, I mentioned my desire for more class discussions and that our studies were being impeded by my classmates' interjections and tangents. She did crack the whip on this, in that she began to ignore Stacy's outbursts. Needless to say, class was so boring after that. I slept more and cared far less as graduation came nearer and nearer.

Bright Side

Fireworksby Megatonz

Things are truly what you make them, so let's resolve to have the best of each moment glorified in our minds as we travel through the rest of the week. If you're too busy, stop for a glass of ice water and then focus on the mimosa and reproduction vintage handtooled pumps you'll treat yourself to when your work is done! Hot? Make some Kool-Aid ice cube tray popsicles and keep your bras in the freezer! Broke? Decoupage a boombox with old magazines and sell it to a local gallery or take some of the clothes you never wear to a consignment shop! Being positive will show through in all aspects of your life. You will inspire others! Your skin will improve! You will exude sexiness and confidence!

It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken by Seth

This was not a book that I was really wowed by, but it definitely kept my attention. Though the book is not plot driven, I wasn't thinking, "That was it?" when I was done. Seth's search for information on an obscure cartoonist Kalo from 1930s-1950s periodicals leads him to ultimately discover much about himself as he openly discusses his personal ticks along the way. The style was clearly heavily influenced by Seth's love of classic comic art; I enjoyed the clean, swooping lines even though the style is not my regular cuppa. The particular copy I have is horribly bound, with a quarter of the pages completely detached. Though annoying to sift through, the loose pages give way to an endearing set of personal neuroses and incessant fretting. I dislike self-conscious graphic novels (read: Craig Thompson and Jhonen Vasquez), but this self-consciousness differs from self-awareness (i.e. "Whoa, der, this drawing looks like crap" notes) which peeves me out! Though I do not always agree with Seth and though he seems debilitated at times by his depression or by his concern over whether or not he is depressed, the neurotic introspection resonated in me and I would occasionally put the book down and reflect on my own mental state. A quote from GoodReads.com member Cody was pretty spot on: "What saves this graphic novel from navel-gazing misanthropy is Seth's awareness that he is a navel-gazing misanthrope." One thing I am still sore about is that there was a Glossary and copies of the Kalo works Seth has collected in the back of the book! I sure wish I had known that while I was reading!!!! This graphic novel is Seth's first and I would be interested in reading another. Recommended for Woody Allen types, the old-fashioned, and Drawn and Quarterly readers.

Suckitude

Whilst surfing the world wide web, I encountered this advertisement. Now I have never been to a Fashion Bug. I believe the closest location is 45 minutes away. I will never go there because they do not sell flattering clothes. I have never considered myself a "fashionista" or a style snob, and if I saw this woman on the street wearing this outfit I wouldn't even think twice about it (and that is also another problem entirely). Okay so they are using a plus size model, but obviously Fashion Bug doesn't know how to dress one! This girl is cute and obviously not fat, just a full figured woman. However, that bold white line on the bottom of the shirt is accenting the widest part of her body! Then that all over print just widen her out. She is rendered shapeless and thereby reduced to a boxy or sack-like shape. I don't dislike the cropped pants, but if I was going to pair a loose fitting top like that with capris, I'd choose some that were more form fitting. The trouser style look, just adds more volume and fabric and baggyness. So, as I said before, though this outfit looks like crap here in an ad, it wouldn't phase me if I saw it in public. This is a severe problem because if you're running an ad, you should feature exciting outfits that represent your company. This ad tells me that Fashion Bug is for boring young and middle-aged women who like cheap clothes and are more than likely overweight. AWESOME! It lightweight emotionally moved me. It's a really interesting graph showing the box office revenue from most (?) major releases from 1986 until February 2008. It made me feel old. It also made me relive my life through movie releases. Remembering Episode I coming out in sixth grade and all the movies I loves as a child being released. I didn't realize that I was supposed to hover my cursor over the graph until after scrolling to the 1990s. There is a search at the top, too!

Twenty Set: At first I felt like this website was not for me, with links about marriage and talk about "young professionals," but once I poked around I realized how relevent the content is to me! There are articles about graduating college, job searching, how to get by without health insurance, etc. The author, Monica, talks also about blogging, not wanting kids, relationships, Sex and the City, vegetarianism, and other relevant things to me and girls about my age.

You know those LifeLock commercials with the CEO giving out his social security number? I dislike how Blogger does not have a way to add "friends" or contacts! The only way to do anything like that (where other blogger.com users are linked on your profile) is to start a blog together. Blogrolling is good, but people are not alert to the fact that you've added them unless you tell them so. This is only my seventh post and I have been busy outside of work (where I've done all my updating so far), so I don't feel like telling people to check out my blog because there is not too much content.

That said, check out these blogs:
http://liebemarlene.blogspot.com
I really like this girl, Rhiannon. I don't know exactly how I feel about this book. I enjoyed it, as in the story was intriguing. But there were so many things that bothered me.
The story mainly follows 9 year-old Oskar, whose father died on 9/11/01. Oskar finds a key in his dad's closet and quests to find the corresponding lock somewhere in NYC. Obviously this herculean task is impossible, but that is a part of both the novel and Foer's appeal. I enjoyed Everything is Illuminated in high school and this book is completely in line with Foer's writing style and voice. Oskar's story is first person, but the novel's other voices (his grandmother and estranged grandfather) are epistolary.
At times, it was difficult to read the book because it really did make me meditate a lot on the terrorist attacks. The child's perspective softened it all a bit, but my own renewed thoughts on the situation's violence and horror were lightweight wrenching.
I disliked the severe weirdness of the grandparents. They were survivors from the bombings in Dresden in World War II. If I am supposed to perceive them as people who suffered a great loss and are so severely, debilitatingly hurt from the event that their ability to function rationally is damaged, then what does that say for Oskar, his mother, and the others emotionally scarred by September 11th? The grandparents' overly OCD and constantly painful relationship came off as unrealistic to me, that eighty year-olds would act in ways that were so insane. It seemed like a cover-up for their sanity almost. I really enjoyed it. Nausicaä is a total badass and a total mystic sweetheart. She takes over her dying father's post as head of their community's defenses, even though she is so young and a female. She also has "special powers" and skillz allowing her to deftly control her glider and to communicate with animals and plants. The original and weird post-apocalyptic style story was easy to follow and engaging; giant bugs and fungus have overtaken almost all of Earth's surface, stranding humans to live in small communities on the fringes of the encroaching, deadly fungus forests.
In general, I am not into manga at all. I liked a lot of the detail of the fungal foliage and humongous insects, but this one dude consistently looked mentally retarded or like his head was punched in. This was recommended to me by an avid comic reader and I recommend it to you. I look forward to reading the rest of the series, six more novels and a 4 volume "Perfect Collection."

I am on Good Reads if you want to find out what else I am reading, want to read, or have read and what I thought.

Happy Bloomsday

June 16th is the day that takes place in Joyce's Ulysses. I must say I am still proud of myself for finishing that dauntingly epic novel. I read it for my Joyce class in 2005. As the course progressed, our copies of the book fell apart. Our furious notes, dog ears, highlights, and page flipping certainly added to the destruction, but it was quite severe. The pages became detached from the spine in large chunks of pages. The binding long rendered useless, my copy of the Gabler edition of Ulysses sits proudly on my shelf, still resting from the wear of that spring semester. And summer. I turned in my final paper a semester late.

happy birthmka

All my life I thought the Olsen twins were at least 5 years younger than me. This is because I grew up watching the endless syndication of Full House and seeing their line of musical mystery VHS tapes, The Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley, for years at the local library. Little did I know that they were only about a year younger than me. It's uncomfortable. During the years I spent scoffing at their baby-ness, they were rolling in the income across America from all the merchandise featuring their cherubic visage (visages? do identical twins have more than one visage?). Now they're billionaire, constantly post-anorexic fashion icons. What am I now?

I am launching this blog on the anniversary of the day of birth of two humans I have never been able to identify with. I am no mega superstar or rehab material. But with this blog, I want to establish myself. I have never had some sort of self-awareness crisis, but I want this blog to be the things my personal blog could never be. I loved it! I loved it! I feel like the story was really intense and scary because it was a dream, so anything could happen. The bad guy, Scallywax, keeps popping up over and over and you feel like Christopher D. will never escape. Translated from Spanish and put out by Drawn and Quarterly, The Extended Dream... is never confusing. With constantly changing locations, characters shifting into other people, and abstract, impossible situations, it seems like it would be easy to get lost. And though the main character is as confused as we are as to his wild situation, it is simple to comprehend the lucid story. The surreal scenario is artfully shaped through intriguing dialog and a mix of scratchboard and brush styles. I read a some reviews online and they were mixed. Some people said that the story was predictable, but I cannot understand how you'd know what was going to happen!! I totes recommend it.

Accidenly keeping with the dream comic theme, I started Rabid Eye: The Dream Art of Rick Vietch (The Collected Rare Bit Fiends). It is hard for me to read this because each dream is one page. I do not know that I will finish it. The whole intro about dreams and collective consciousness and the stuff that Unitarian guy had to say about Freud or whatever is not anything I am interested in, so Veitch's dreams are meaningless to me in their abbreviated form.

Things I Love Thursday

Gulf Shores, Alabama
I am going camping this weekend with my boyfriend at Gulf State Park. Nous allons manger des fruit de mer et nager. (We are going to eat some seafood and swim. [The great things about foreign langages is learning travel speak first; it makes tripping so exotic.]) Eating at Sea 'n Suds is going to be rad, a staple of Gulf Shores vacations. I haven't been in two summers. This is the beach my family always returns to. I know all the best places to visit, but as we'll only be staying two nights I know we won't get into much. I haven't packed any of my stuff, but my car is crammed full of beach chairs, wild kites (one from Walgreens titled "Baby Bat," a very abstract color block version of a bat, and the other from Academy Sports featuring a wizard in a purple robe and hat, weilding a wand atop a flying dragon), a big umbrella, bottled water, a blanket, and towels. I can't find my pink heart shades, so I'm going to pick up some new ones and maybe a big floppy hat after work. Look for me here: http://www.bamabeachcams.com/

graphic novels

Today I read Hey, Wait... by Norweigan artist Jason. A quote on the back said it would "utterly break [my] heart" and that it is "one of the most emotionally gripping graphic novels ever created," but I would only classify it as lightweight harsh. Here is a good Time review that is a good sum up without giving too much away, but spoiling the big pictures.
I am almost finished with The Extended Dream of Mr. D by Spanish author Max and put out through Drawn and Quarterly. I will review that tomorrow. I have about 20 comic books and graphic novels to sift through from Lance. I think I will talk about them all on here.

High Heels
I have bought two pairs in the last month. I have always stayed away from them because of the comfort issue. Since I started a new job three weeks ago, I've been wearing them and it is not so bad. I'm ready to catch up with the rest of the women in the world. The only problem is having sweaty summer feet which causes a Slip 'n Slide Effect which crushes my toes under my weight. But I think they're a simply way to dress (or sex) up any outfit. I went wedge shopping yesterday, but was supremely underwhelmed.

Runner Up:

Praha, České republice
I meditate more and more everyday about my trip. I loled at the introduction parts, but the story itself is grating to me because of the stylized writing style. This really suprised me, because I was so certain of how much I would enjoy the book. We will see. And since I can't stand being tied to one book at a time, I also brought in (keeping with the recent past pop lit theme) Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer (I loved Everything is Illuminated in high school [did anyone see the movie? was it good?]) and The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean (I've wanted to read forever). I bought the later 2 for $.50 at a yard sale and $.99 at the thrift store. So needless to say, I am stoked about having a job that allows me to read a fuck ton. Are there any books you want me to read?
